WELCOME TO SAPPHO'S LESBOS, 600 BC.
Except, it isn't Sappho's any longer...For four years already, Sappho has been in exile in Sicily, the community of the city-state, Mytilene, instead coming together around her former rival, the singer and teacher, Gorgo. Public processions, symposia and festivals are now led by a singer Sappho would have despised to see fill her sandals, while Myrsilus - her nemesis - is at the helm politically.
Yet, fill Sappho's sandals, Gorgo does.
To such a degree, that the Gods have given her the inspired idea of starting a new festival, one in honour of Apollo, the God of the arts. During the festivities, however - perhaps deliberate, on the bidding of the Gods, perhaps not - the singer's chanting opens a rift in the universe and in the days and weeks that follow, strangers start showing up. Strangers from others worlds, strangers from the future, and Gorgo - with her entire group - has to welcome these newcomers into Mytilenian society.
Only once they fulfill their function, Apollo tells Sappho's successor in a dream, can they return home, but what their function is, is left up to them to find out.
